History and Corporate Profile
In 1997, when Internet Technology seemed to be rapidly developing and there was an increasing demand for domain names to be used within emerging cultures and economies, the concept of domain name registration in relation to Dominica's .dm suffix was introduced to the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica by the Domini Corporation.
The DotDM Corporation was subsequently established with its mission to manage and facilitate the licensing of Dominica's intellectual property towards maximizing benefit to that nation on an economic and social level. At a time when a number of unique challenges and opportunities existed, the .dm name was being introduced to the global marketplace and was perfectly poised to serve the needs of a variety of internet interests spanning numerous languages and cultures.
It was felt that the .dm domain name, supported by strategic promotional efforts directed at clearly identified niche markets would be readily absorbed by the global Internet community. Showcasing the many offerings of the Commonwealth of Dominica including International Business, Digital Communications and Travel and Tourism resources, the .dm name would embrace such diverse markets as North, South and Central America along with Europe.
On February 2nd, 2001, a Domain Names Services Agreement was signed between the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica and The DotDM Corporation. This exclusive agreement to administer the .dm Internet Registry and market the .dm suffix worldwide was signed between then Minister for Communication and Works, Reginald Austrie, on behalf of the Government and Chief Executive Officer of The DotDM Corporation Jennifer Aird-Joseph.
DM domain names were previously administered by the University of Puerto Rico. Since the re-delegation, The DotDM Corporation has been negotiating on behalf of the DM Registry and forged the most viable and responsible relationships. The DM Registry will facilitate the establishment of a unique presence for the Commonwealth of Dominica in the cyber-marketplace.
